 Arraial d'Ajuda - Presentation

Arraial d'Ajuda

There is no way to hide it! The presence of the hippies in Arraial d’Ajuda was so intense that it is impossible not to notice the influence of this type of life in the architecture as well as in the routine of the inhabitants of the village.

The village of fishermen that existed there until the end of the decade of the 60’s, all that remains today are the church and the historical center. All the restore colors and shapes, with the classic style of the old constructions mixed with the irreverent modernity of the houses and restaurants, the majority built by the hippies in the 70’S.

Contrary to Trancoso which is also a district of the city of Porto Seguro, in Arraial d’Ajuda the hippies transformed the atmosphere, filling up the place with new ideas and introducing new way of seeing the world, without just  looking only for a total integration with the nature.

In spite of these transformations, the historical center remained intact, because even the name of the place had its origin in this way. After all, Arraial means settlement, village and just a short time ago, Arraial d’Ajuda was exactly this – just a group of small house around a church.

It is the most picturesque district of Porto Seguro where the objective is always gayety. Even the streets are sinuous on purpose, because straight lines are not creative. It is only in Arraial d’Ajuda that the people have the opportunity to visit the oldest monuments and right after that, walk along Broadway or 5th avenue – in honor of the two largest streets of  New York, known for the cultural agitation.

In Arraial, Broadway is a bit different. It is a lane which begins in the principal square, full of stores and restaurants. Near Broadway is the Beco das Cores with its bars and restaurants sharing a small space, but fascinating, where the local artists hold shows very chose to the public. There are also same shops that sell products for tourists.

The district of Arraial d’Ajuda can be reached by the ferryboats that leave Porto Seguro. The two places are close to each other so the trip doesn’t take more than 10 minutes. As a matter of fact, exactly because they are so close to each other that the tourists can stay in Arraial d’Ajuda and look for products and services in Porto Seguro.
