 Maceió - Presentation

The esmeralda green sea borders by coconut trees is what first impresses the tourist that arrives in Maceió, a sinuous city, struck between the ocean and the lagoons, mainly, the Mundaú and Manguala Lagoons. After all, the state of Alagoas doesn’t have this name by chance: there are almost 30 of the them spread along the whole coast. There is an average of one for each 10 kilometers.

Water isn’t the only thing that Maceio has plenty of. The city is famous for the quantity of coconut trees – there are more than 800 thousand, in other words, there are more coconut trees than people. Since it couldn’t be different the coconut milk is extremely cheap and excellent for cooking off in any of the 300 days of sun guaranteed per year. The trees and the large number of local sailing boats on the beaches help enrich the hand escape of the border which has an almost 5 km long sidewalk full of restaurants, bars and kiosks, without mentioning the variety of hotels for all the budgets.

Besides the sea food and other mussels like the sururu, which is a mussel picked out of the lagoons, another delicacy appreciated in Maceio is the tapioca. The traditional tapioca is made with coconut but is possible to find tapiocas with various fillings, ham and cheese being among the most popular ones. For those who like sweets, you can choose banana, guava and others.

One the main attractions of Maceio is the Pajuçara Beach, where there is a natural pool 2 km from the coast. The tourists can reach the place sailing in small sail boats, very rustic and with no help of motors. The beaches are good, with a usually calm sea and the water is always clear, green and warm because the coral reefs in the region don’t let the cold running water in, this way, the temperature of the water can reach up to 23ºC in the area near the margin.

There are some monuments in the central districts. However, the majority of the buildings are in terrible states of preservation. The historical buildings are located in the high part of Maceio where the belvederes and extremely charming squares are also located. In Jaraguá, where the part that is responsible for having stimulated the grout of the city is located, there are various old warehouses that were restored and now house bars and nightclubs.

If you go by car, don’t worry if you see enormous plantations of greens around the city. It is not really gross but sugar-came. Alagoas is the second largest producer of sugarcane in the country lasing only to São Paulo.
