Not taking the merit of other historic destinations of Minas Gerais, but Tiradentes
is one of the select cities which kept the rustic atmosphere of the colonial period without the explicit invasion of modernity. One of the
probable motives is that the location stayed too long in the ostracism and, up to nowadays, it’s not exactly the most demanded destination of the
region, which makes the place ideal for those who wants some peace.
Tiradentes, who adopted such name in the occasion of Proclamação da República
(Republic Proclamation), in 1889, passed much time isolated, after the gold of da Serra de São José depleted. Only in the 20’s, when a groups of
prominent intellectuals passed in the city and got enchanted with the historic row of houses, the city became one of the notable cities which
integrates the gold circuit. It was expectable since, with the oblivion, the historic center was impeccable.
Today, the story is different. Tiradentes was rediscovered by tourists, who
transit with local guides in charming chariots, though in fewer quantity than Ouro Preto. Electric cables, which contrasts so much with the
landscape in other locations, don’t exist in the city, since all the cables are distributed in an underground network. So, it’s not at random
that the city started to host a cinema festival, in January, and a gastronomical festival, usually in July. The conscience of the residents, who
knows the historic importance of Tiradentes, is fundamental to keep the city preserved and to captivate tourists.
The bucolic look of Tiradentes definitely isn’t suitable with the developed tour
industry of the city, which has good restaurants and hotels, without mentioning the local craftsmanship studios, which are extremely varied and
rich. You can’t miss the train ride, after visiting the nice churches of the city, especially Matriz de Santo Antônio, which has works of
Aleijadinho.
