 Trancoso - Presentation

TRANCOSO

Presentation

A rustic and mystic atmosphere, perfect for those who want place and quiet any time of the year.

Even though it is next to Porto Seguro which is one of the most frequented place by tourists mainly in the summer, the district of Trancoso has a permanent harmony.

It is a place where there is no concern with clocks, traffic and any other reason that is not related to being in contact with the nature.

The downtown party Trancoso is concentrated in the Quadrado. It is a type of square which exists since the period when the just setters arrived in the region, in the 16th century. In spite of being called Quadrado (square), the area is a rectangular area and forms an improvised soccer field.

The square is surrounded by well preserved houses built in the colonial period, besides a small church where masses are held up to today. The houses around the square are not used for living in. They are used as inns, bars and shops that sell handicrafts.

In Trancoso, even the illumination isn’t conventional. There are no light pasts and the illumination is all done by candles and several antique oil lamps, but the charm is really the church with reflectors that light up its structure from the batlom up. At night, there are very few points of light around the Quadrado and the only things can be easily made out are the stars and the church.

The same as with the other villages of the Costa do Descobrimento, Trancoso receive a countless number of hippies that fled from the dictator ship of the 60’S and 70’S. However, the hippies didn’t change the characteristics of the place and maintained the rustic air of Trancoso. In spite of the peace and quiet, sometimes there are parties in Trancoso. The locals and tourists hold a type of Luau in the Quadrado, called Buraco Louco (Crazy Hole).

Trancoso is a district of Porto Seguro, located south of the city. The easiest way to get there is to go by the ferryboat that leaves Porto Seguro to Arraial d’Ajuda and drive 45 kilometers of asphalted road until the village. The more daring ones can cover a dist road that begins around 12 kilometers after Arraial d’Ajuda. There are 15 kilometers by a trail that times offers precarious conditions.

Since it is near Porto Seguro, many types of services that aren’t found in Trancoso are easily found in the neighboring villages. However, it’s easier to spend the days in Trancoso and, whenever necessary. All you have to do is visit  Arraial d’Ajuda or Porto Seguro to get what you need.

The best beaches of Trancoso are: Nativo, Coqueiro and Rio da Barra. All of them are relatively calm with light fine sand and hardly no waves which makes the places ideal for the children. Various artists have houses in the region like Maria Bethania and Elba Ramalho, who become the name of a school.
