Grande Hotel |
The therapeutic properties of the sulfur waters that spring from Araxá’s soil made
the city famous as a hydrothermal ranch since the 19th century. It’s the right destination for those who want to be in contact with
nature, searching for spiritual peace as well as adventure on any eco routes of the region.
Termas de Araxá and Complexo do Barreiro, famous by the medicinal mud indicated
for treatment of several diseases, has a set of swimming pools, where different kinds of baths are at disposal. Some of them even include
massages. They are located right next to another great tour spot, the "Grande Hotel".
The privileged location of Araxá, next to Serra da Bocaina, favors the practice
of ecotourism and extreme sports, like climbing, rafting, rappel and even hang gliding. At the mountains, there’s a belvedere where a runway
for hang gliding was built, and also a restaurant.
Like any small city of Minas Gerais, Araxá has restaurants specialized in typical
dishes. The sweets became so traditional that turned into synonym of flavor and quality. In some specialized stores, tourists can watch the
manufacturing of delicacies and even get the recipes. There are several stills in the region, where tourists can taste the delicious sugarcane
brandy produced in the city.
Araxá was the birthplace of some peculiar characters that reside in the popular
imagination. Among the notable citizens is Dona Beja, or Ana Jacinta de São José, woman of advanced habits for her time. She was the lover of
powerful men and was known for her beauty and her audacious baths in the waterfalls around the city. In Araxá, there’s a museum in homage to
her.
