The first residents of the region installed themselves at “Colônia de Santa Isabel”,
in 1847. There were almost 200 german immigrants that arrived to “Ilha de Nossa Senhora do Desterro” and occupied the area, which today belongs
to the cities of Águas Mornas and Rancho Queimado. Since then, the german colonization in the South of the State started.
With much difficulty, the colonists survived, despite the malaria outbreak that
decimated the population and the unfertile lands. In 1860, “Colônia de Teresópolis “ was created close to the spring of Cubatão River, also with
the arrival of german immigrants and, a few time later, it became a commercial and administrative center of Santa Catarina’s country side.
In 1865, the settlement of Teresópolis was unified with the settlement of Santa
Isabel, by determination of the Imperial Government. In the beginning of the 20th century, Teresópolis had its name changed to
“Quebaça”. And so it remained until 1961, when it stopped being a district of “Santo Amaro da Imperatriz” and earned its own autonomy as a city.
The political and administrative seat was in Águas Mornas, and then it became the official name of the city.
Actually, the local commerce survives with tourism and most of the 5000 inhabitants
still live in the country side keeping themselves away from the local tourism. The production of greenery is also an important economic activity
and the city is the second biggest supplier of greenery of Florianópolis. With the mote "Águas Mornas, um pedacinho da Alemanha no Vale do
Cubatão", the city hall honors the first inhabitants of an important historic period of the State, fundamental for the formation of the
local culture. |
