“Colônia Teresópolis” is the result of the arrival of 60 german families in 1860.
It was founded by the Imperial Government and by catholic and Lutheran immigrants coming from “Renânia” and Westphalia, in Germany. The recent
arrived germans were conducted to the coffee plantations, to work in the harvest while fixating at Brazil. These works were called "Die
Kaffeepfluecker", which translated to portuguese means "os coletores de café" (coffee harvesters).
Since the beginning of its formation, the colony adopted activities turned to
commerce, transforming the place in a short period of time in a kind of center that grouped together the administrative and religious centers
of the neighbor settlements. This last aspect was crucial for the solidification of “Ordem dos Frades Menores” (Franciscans).
In the real property were the german community was installed, the cultivation of
corn, potatoes and beans were successful due to the climate conditions, which didn’t favor the plantation of sugar crane, cotton and coffee.
Even though, the cultivation of these products helped in the economic stabilization of the colony for a long period.
