Ten young pilots formed, in 1961, “Táxi Aéreo Marília”, which at that time just
transported cargo and passengers among the states of Paraná São Paulo and Mato Grosso. In the end of that decade, the headquarters of the company
moved to São Paulo and, then, the establishment started to transport mail.
Commandant Rolim Amaro became a minor partner in 1971 and, a few years later,
bought more than 50% of the company’s stocks and assumed the command of the company, which adopted the name of “TAM - Transportes Aéreos
Regionais”. Actually, it’s known as “TAM Linhas Aéreas”.
Since the 80’s, the company is growing. The first push towards progress came after
the arrival of the “Fokker-27”, planes that substituted the two-motor aircrafts. After buying “Votec” (another air company), TAM extended its
activities to mid-west and north regions of Brazil, increasing the number of destinations it attends.
TAM inaugurated a new era in the regional aviation with the arrival of the planes
Fokker-100, in the beginning of the 90’s, same period in which it created a fidelity program. In 1996, it started to actuate in the whole
national territory and, two years later, made its first international flight to Miami, with the arrival of the “Airbus A330”.
In 2003, TAM reorganized the aerial network and started to share flights with
Varig, besides launching “e-TAM Auto Atendimento”, which allows passengers to check in on few minutes. To adequate the fleet to the increase of
the demand of domestic and international flights, TAM will receive its 10th airplane “Airbus A330” until 2005 October, which will be used in
international flights, besides having already ordered other high technology planes for the following years. |
