Arraial d'Ajuda - Beaches - Apaga Fogo Beach

The fishermen used to make bonfires in the sand to guide them selves when they left for work. However, the tide would go up and put out the fires, leaving the fishermen many times adrift. That’s why the beach is called Praia do Apaga Fogo (Apaga Fogo Beach).

It is a very steep beach, with a short strip of sand that usually disappears during high. In determined hours of the day, it is impossible to swim. It is the beach that is closet to the city and is very close to the place where the ferry arrives, just cross the street and go through an alley until the beach.

Even though it is an urban beach, it is very clean. In Porto Seguro as well as in the neighboring districts, there is a sewer system which is treated and never thrown into the water. There are many restaurants and they are not usually full.
