 Arraial d'Ajuda - History

Arraial d'Ajuda was formely known as Vila de Santo Amaro and was just a small fishing village located 4 km from Porto Seguro. The few people that lived there had small houses on the seaside and the high part of the village, and there was only one sugarcane plantation.

Arraial d'Ajuda began to really grow when a farmer found the statue of a saint when he was going to work and decided to take the statue home. However, the statue disappeared and the next day, appeared again in the same place where the farmer had found it before. The strange fact occurred three times before the fishermen decided to build a small chapel for the saint.

On the arrival of the jesuits in Brazil, in the middle of the 16th century, a church was built for the statue which was Nossa Senhora do Rosário. However, the name of the church began to be called Nossa Senhora d'Ajuda since the saint was known for solving everybody's problems. Every year, Arraial d'Ajuda receives hundreds of pilgrims that go to the region in the order to pay their vows to the saint.

Arrail d'Ajuda really became famous starting in the decade of the 70's when the village started to receive the hippies that fled from the dictatorship. The influence of the style of the life of the hippies is visible in the village which has an historical center with a church and colonial houses, besides several streets and houses with an exotic archtecture.
