| Baixada Santista - Presentation |
The Baixada Santista is a region that offers countless options for those who
want to take advantage of the natural beauties of the Paulista coast without going too far away from the city of São Paulo. Besides the
marvellous beaches and the contact with the natural diversity of the Atlantic Forest, the tourist who visit the Baixada get to know a bit of
the history of Brazil and of the first colonists that came from Portugal.
Nine cities form the Baixada Santista: Bertioga, Cubatão, Guarujá, Itanhaém,
Mongaguá, Peruíbe, Praia Grande, Santos and São Vicente, that cover an area of 2300 km2. Since they are so near one to another, the
cities give the visitor the chance to pass through the whole region in a short period of time. The tourists can stay in any of the cities that
offers the desired infrastructure while they visit the other tourist attractions and look for entertainment in neighboring places.
During the high season, almost a million and a half of people coming from all
over the world visit the Baixada Santista which has activities for all the tastes; from ecologic trails for the more daring up to
museums and secular churches for those who are interested in culture. There are historical relics spread all over the place. Cities like
Itanhaém and São Vicente have churches and colonial buildings, including the first fortresses used to protect the brazilian territory.
Besides this, São Vicente has a historical importance since it was the first vollage founded in Brazil and was also the starting point for
the many "bandeirantes" that braved the interior of the State, besides having occupied the position of capital of Brazil for a short
period.
Now, for those who like beaches and are interested only in enjoying the nature,
Bertioga is one of the most agitated cities of the Baixada Santista by the tourists who look for ecologic and adventure itineraries. A tourist
attraction that involves culture and adventure is the "Caminhos de Anchieta" which is in the stage of being implanted in the region.
The idea is to go along the main courses made by the jesuit priest José de Anchieta in various secular trails existing in the region. It is a
way to mix ecotourism with culture in an urbanized and well structured region.
Tha channel of Bertioga which flows into the sea, separates Bertioga from
Guarujá. One of the easiest ways to reach Guarujá is to take the balsa that leaves from Bertioga. The city is one of the most important ones
of the Paulista coast and also has hidden nooks like totally deserted beaches which can be only be reached by boat or by trails made in the
middle of the forest. SInce it attracts so many tourists, Guarujá is one of the cities with the best structure of the coast and is usually
very full during the high season.
Tourism is not the only factor responsible for economic development of the
Baixada. There is an important industrial park located in Cubatão, besides the complex of the Seaport of Santos, the largest seaport of Latin
America which is responsible for the largest part of the brazilian exports and imports.
The Baixada Santista has become one of the principal tourist polos of the State
because it enchants and offers entertainment for all who know it. The investment in the infrastructure and the creation of improvements in the
touristic points is transforming tha Baixada Santista into the preferred coastal region of the tourists who visit the city of São Paulo, but
who also want to see the Paulista coast. |
