 Barretos - Typical Food

The population of Barretos lives a tranquil routine but all you need is the appearance of country music in one of the squares of the city for a small meeting of friends at the end of the afternoon to turn it into a party. Just imagine the scene: 11 days of planned commemorations with live shows and other attractions including games and rodeos with invincible bulls.

Only a big dish called “Queima de Alho” (Burn of Garlic), to increase the morale of the people of Barretos. The meal is prepared in a wood fired stove and has carreteiro rice, beans and a mixture of manioc meal and meat. The dish is so famous that it has become a tradition even in the Festa de Peão de Boiadeiro and gives its name to a cooking contest that is held during the Festival.

In the “Queima de Alho” contest held in the Festa de Peão de Boidadeiro, the winner is the one that prepares in the shortest time, in a stove near the ground, a dish a la cattle drivers. The dishes prepared by the participants must include carreteiro rice, fat beans, a mixture of manioc meal and meat and even a barbecue.

No matter how you try to reproduce the typical taste of the “Queima de Alho”, it is impossible to find the dish with the same taste as those prepared in the city because, besides having a different type of seasoning, they are served “a la barretense” or “country air”.

After getting to know the famous typical food of Barretos, it is now understandable where all the gaiety, bustle and force come from. For those who want to know a relaxing and lively place, its worth the while to visit the “Country Capital” and remember that you will leave the place in a very good mood and even yelling: - “Seguuuura Peão” (Hang on, Cowboy!)
