 Barretos - History

    The city was founded in 1831 on the arrival of the brothers Francisco José Barreto and Antônio Barreto. They were from Caldas Velhas, in Minas Gerais, and after building their families, they decided to move to the Sertão de São Bento de Araraquara, which today is Araraquara. The land where they lived was called Fazenda Fortaleza. Some time later, another family coming from Caldas Velhas arrived in the some region. They were the family Simão Antônio Marques, and they called their land Fazenda Monte Alegre.

    The picneers got together and in 1845, donated to the church on area located between the Fortaleza and Monte Alegre farms. The region had three names: first it was called Patrimônio do Divino Espírito Santo, then Vila Barretos, and finally Barretos. On August 25, 1854, the member of the two families donated part of their farm to the city so that a chapel and a village could be built.

    In 1870, a strong frost destroyed a large part of the existing forest in Barretos. Unfortunately in the same year, the vegetation which was already very dry was completely burned in a fire that destroyed all the local forest.

    When spring arrived, the rains helped to recover the natural pastures which developed the breeding of cattle and promoted the growth of the economic part of the city which ended up being the “Capital of the National Cattle Raising”.

    Besides the growth of the cattle raising activities the region began to expand in the area of transport as well. The reforms in the sector improved the living conditions and stabilized the urban network of the city, causing the immigration in the region. In 1909, the railway was built in Barretos. With the advance in the area 8 of transports and the "Campanhia Frigorífica Anglo Pastoril" and built the workers villa. Time went by and Barretos continental to be the center of the national cattle rising and there was also a large advance in the agricultural activities.

    The region of Barretos has a country culture and traditions formed by the folklore and marked by the country rhythm. From “National Cattle Raising Capital”, Barretos started to be called the “Brazilian Country Capital”. The great change look place almost 50 years ago when the Festa do Peão de Boiadeiro was held for the first time.

    It is impossible to talk about the history of Barretos without mentioning, the event that began in 1955 and is already part of the climb of the city. The economy of the fabrication of country articles grew because of the Festival. Barretos houses the famous Parque do Peão, designed by Oscar Niemeyer and inaugurated in 1985, the place where the largest Rodeo of Latin America is held.
