Maquiné Cave is located on the small city of Cordisburgo, 114km away from
Belo Horizonte. There are about 100 caves in the region, but most of them cannot be visited, since they are still being studied by
scientists.
It’s 650 m long and is 18 m deep, divided in huge halls interconnected by narrow
corridors. Each environment of the cave received a denomination according to the shape of rocks and stalactites. There’s “salão do urso” (Bear
Hall), “salão do carneiro” ou “do elefante” (Sheep/Elephant Hall), for example, which has a big mushroom which looks like the explosion of an
atomic bomb. The interior temperature in the cave varies between 18ºC and 22ºC.
There were found fossils, bones and prehistoric objects in the cave, indicating
the presence of men thousands of years ago.
