Rei do Mato Cave |
Rei do Mato Cave is almost 1km long, but only 220 meters are opened to public
visitation. It’s considered a living cave by scientists, since it’s still being constituted. The rock formations are created by dripping water
that accumulate limestone and become solid as time passes.
The bigger hall is the third one, with approximately 80 meters of extension.
Several stalactites occupy the environment. Emphasis to "Cenourão" (Big Carrot), which received its name due to its orange color
caused by iron oxide, and to "Sorvetão" (Big Ice Cream), rock that took about 20 thousand years to be formed.
However, the main attraction of Gruta Rei do Mato is in the forth hall. There’s
a rare rock formation: two columns 13m tall and with 30cm of diameter. Compositions of this kind are found only in Gruta de Altamira, at Spain.
The cave also has prehistoric inscriptions and paintings, dated from 6000 years ago.
Rei do Mato Cave is located 62km away from Belo Horizonte.
