 Bonito - History

Rio Sucuri

     The settlement which originated Bonito appeared in the lands of Rincão Bonito Ranch, at the end of 19th century. The property was bought by Capitão Luiz da Costa Leite Falcão, who moved to the region in 1869, with the mission of eradicate the local indians. The local tribes were aggressive and used to destroy the farms.

    The city is located next to the frontier with Paraguay, making the natives participate in Paraguay’s War, which lasted from 1864 to 1870. The brazilian government gave lands in Bonito’s region to several soldiers, contributing to the development of the village.

    Bonito was elevated to the category of city only in 1948. Actually, the city has around 17000 inhabitants and an economy based in agropecuary and tourism.

    More than half of the residents is involved in some kind of tourism activity, one of the reasons which gave Bonito an infrastructure capable of serve every type of public. There are from simple lodges to luxurious hotels, besides a huge variety of restaurants.
