Bonito - Caves - Cave of the Blue Lake

Cave of the Blue Lake

Cave of the Blue Lake

Says the legend that the cave was found by a Terena indian, in 1924. Inside the cave, about 350 meters away from the surface, a lake of intense blue water earns notability among the white calcareous rocks. The scenary impresses tourists and intrigues researchers from all over the world.

In the cave, various fossils of old mammals were found, like the pre-historic Saber Tooth Tiger. There’s only two kinds of animals in the 70m deep and 120m wide lake: a kind of shrimp and a kind of worm, usually found in caves.

The place enchants especially when hit by sunlight, which enters through the stones and is reflected in the water, causing a phenomenon of immense beauty and the sensation that the cave is illuminated by neon lights. The best period to observe this phenomenon is between November and January.

Gruta do Lago Azul is protected by Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional since 1978.
