PORTO SEGURO

Typical Cooking

The gastronomy of Porto Seguro is basically the same as of Bahia. Its largest influence is of the African origin, mainly in the seasoning with herbs and peppers brought from there but the Portuguese cooking and Indian Cooking also had a great influence.

The Moqueca is one of the most popular dishes, consists in cooking the sea food or fish with dendê oil, green peppers, tomatoes, onion, coriander seed and coconut milk, accompanied with pirão and farofa. Another dish is the Vatapá with sea food or chicken, with dendê oil, peanuts and green peppers, and the Shrimp caruru, with fresh dry shrimp. The Acarajé, a small ball of beans filled with a shrimp sauce also is very popular.

Many dishes are served with pepper which is sometimes added directly to the food. Check first or ask for your dish without pepper.
