Violence and problems with security exist in any part of the world. In Brazil, it
isn’t different. However, the foreign tourists who visit the country should take same precautions.
The just of them is to avoid looking like a tourist. Prefer discreet clothes and
never leave the hotel with a tropical shirt, African Safari hat or something like “I Love Brazil”. Instead of carrying big bags or purses, use
the waist and are used to guard cameras and money.
The banks and exchange offices can give change in coins and supply traveler’s
checks. The ideal is to carry very little cash, prefer small notes and never only one large note, besides a credit card for more expensive
shopping. The traveler’s checks are used mainly in hotels because very few stores and restaurants accept them.
On going out walks, carry only the necessary documents: ID Card, passport and in
the case of renting a car, a driver’s license and the document of the car. Check and see if the driver’s license is valid in Brazil.
If you are traveling alone with you children, always have an hand authorization
signed by the other guardian responsible for the child in order to guarantor the permission to travel. This document should be presented at
the Brazilian Consulate of any country to be notarized and translated. The Brazilian Authorities usually require this document on entering or
leaving the country.
It is a good idea to consult your medical insurance to see if it is accepted
abroad. If you have to take special medicine, living the old prescriptions and a short report of you illness for any eventuality. Travel with
comfortable clothes and try to discover which season it is in Brazil. Remember that in Brazil the sun shines almost all year around, even in
the winter, the temperature is pleasant, use sunshine to protect yourself.
Don’t forget to take repellents especially if you plan to visit beaches or the
countryside far from the city.
Never use expensive articles like jewelry, and be careful with cameras. As in any
other place in the world, there are thieves in Brazil who can assault tourists. If you are assaulted, don’t react. It is better to lose your
belongings than your life. But don’t make things easy, never go hitchhiking and don’t offer rides to strange people. |
