Brasília - Churches - Nossa Senhora Aparecida Metropolitan Cathedral

Metropolitan Cathedral

Forget the traditional churches, with towers, rectangular shape and a cross over the door. “Catedral Metropolitana de Brasília”, projected by Oscar Niemeyer, is totally away from that style. It has a circular architecture. The surprises begin right in the entrance. It’s necessary to go through an underground passage that, theoretically, makes reference to the roman sepultures, still in the beginning of the Christianity.

The nave is circular, with 16 symmetrical concrete columns that emerge from a water mirror to, then, unite. The pillars of the work constituted a reference to the thorn crown wore by Jesus Christ in the day of the crucifixion. In the external part, there’s a metal cross.

If, from the outside, the cathedral already calls attention by the beauty and the different architectonical style, from inside the great attractions are the sculptures and panels of renowned artists. One of the prominences is the stained glass formed by 16 panels of Marianne Peretti, without counting the 15 pictures “oil over screen” from Di Cavalcanti, describing “Paixão de Cristo”. In the access square there are other bronze sculptures of Marcos, Mateus, Lucas and João, each one 3 meters high, made by Alfredo Ceschiatti.
