 Brasília - Typical Food

There are lots of restaurants in Brasília. It’s possible to find in Brazil’s capital from establishments with cuisine of international quality to specialists in typical food of “Cerrado” (Brazilian Savanna). It couldn’t be different, because, so many restaurant options are necessary in a city built in the middle of “Planalto Central” to be the political center of Brazil.

Actually, Brasília has almost three million inhabitants and receives innumerous visitors per day, who arrive to work or, simply, to admire the daring architecture of Oscar Niemeyer. Despite the cosmopolitan atmosphere, Brasília was constructed inside a region of the countryside of the State of Goiás and, inevitably, inherited some characteristics and influences of Goiás, which can be seen mainly in the typical gastronomy.

As well as in the State of Goiás, the typical cuisine of Brasília had its origins in the food of the indians and changed as time passed, influenced also by the habits of the explorers who, in past centuries, left for the interior of the country, in search of gold and Indian slaves.

Among the most traditional dishes of the regions "Empadão Goiano", which is like a pie stuffed with chicken and pork, sausage, cheese and “guariroba”. Only a few people know “guariroba”, a palm tree characteristic from the Cerrado (Brazilian Savanna) that generate small fruits and it’s highly consumed. In the city, other traditional dish is "Peixe na Telha", in which the fish, usually surubim or pintado, is grilled on a mud mould.

In Brasília and in the neighbor cities, even in the countryside of the State of Minas Gerais, it’s possible to find "Arroz com Pequi", in which the rice is prepared with this typical fruit of Cerrado. After being cooked, the rice acquires the yellowish color of pequi and a delicious flavor. But, those who are inattentive must be careful to not to bite the, since inside the fruit there are small thorns that adhere to the mouth and are very difficult to remove. In some restaurants, pequi is served without the thorns, but, in case of doubts, avoid problems and dispense the fruit.

Besides pequi, baru, araticum and cagaita are other typical fruits of cerrado, highly consumed by the local population, who uses to make sweets and jams with them. Those who travel to this region may also try the delicious “licor de pequi”, usually drinked after the meals.
