Buriti Palace |
The building carries this name due to common specie of the brazilian savanna, the
Buriti palm tree. The tree became a symbol of the city, honored by a poem of Afonso Arinos, which talked about a lost buriti. A small tree was
planted after the completion of the building, but the plant died. On the second try, the tree developed and ended up register as city patrimony
in 1985.
Palácio do Buriti was constructed from a project of architect Nauro Jorge Esteves,
integrant of a team of professionals of Oscar Niemeyer, and is the seat of the government of Distrito Federal. In the front of the building
there’s a replica of the sculpture “Roman Wolf”, breast-feeding Rômulo and Remo. The work is a present of the Italian Government due to the
anniversary date of Brasília and Rome, which occurs in the same date, April 21st. |
