Train Station |
Symbol of the progress’s arrival to the city, Campo Grande’s train station forms
an important architectonic complex, consisted by warehouses and paralelepípedo paved roads, farther the worker’s village and the manager’s
residences. The whole place is protected by municipal laws and keeps the original architecture from the beginning of the century practically
untouched.
The works began in 1909, when engineer Emílio Schnoor, employee of the “Noroeste
do Brasil” Railroad Company, arrived at Campo Grande to define the route and start the works. The railroad was inaugurated in 1914, but the
building was finished only in 1935, when engineer Aurélio Ibiapina finished the Noroeste’s Station and the house to the supervision, located
in front of the main building.
The entrance hall has a stairway and is the only hall of the station that has
concrete roof. The other rooms have only a wood ceiling under the rooftop, made with French roof tiles. The rails were imported from Europe.
Noroeste had more than 160 real properties, where the employees used to live, the workshops to fix the machinery operated and also the
company’s administration. Both administrator and employee houses were pretty big and the main difference between them is the presence of
details, like balcony and garage, besides the height of the right feet.
The railroad boosted Campo Grande’s economic development during the first decades
of the 20th century, transporting cargoes and passengers. Nowadays, the region next to the old railroad station is considered also as a
excitement point of the city’s night, with several night clubs and show houses.
