Campo Grande - 14's Clock

14's Clock

The clock of 14 de julho street lasted almost 40 years as a reference point at Campo Grande’s downtown, until being demolished during the 70’s. However, in 2002 the city earned a new clock, replica of the original historic monument.

The first clock was inaugurated in 1933 on the Campo Grande’s busiest street of that time. It was 5 meters tall and functioned with strings. The ringing sound was so strong that it could be heard from almost everywhere in the city. About 37 years later, in 1970, the clock was already a traditional meeting point. But, it became na obstacle to the traffic and had to be demolished.

Just in 2002 a comission of the city hall decided to rebuild the clock, next to the original place. After five months of works, the replica got ready and today it’s placed 100 meters away from the original place, next to other tour points of Campo Grande, like the old State Government’s seat building, Morada dos Baís, Casa da Memória and Casa do Artesão.

The new clock also has an electrical mechanism further more advanced, despite using the original screen and pointers.
