Morada do Baís |
Today Morada dos Baís works as a cultural center and space for exhibits and shows
in Campo Grande. At the building there’s the Tour Information Counter and Campo Grande’s Convention Bureau. The permanent exhibit includes old
furniture and paintings of Lídia Baís, daughter of the first owner of the house.
Built during 1913 - 1918, the small palace was property of Bernardo Franco Baís,
who lived there until 1938. The masonry building has distinct floors, connected through internal balconies. The original roof tiles were made
of slate and imported from Italy. Besides the ample windows and imposing architecture, the building is right in front of the railroad.
After the trader’s death, the building was sold and occupied by hotels, since
it’s located on a strategic position at the city’s downtown. The first one to occupy Morada dos Baís was Nominando Pimentel, who gave the place
the name of Oimentel Pension. In 1947, a tragedy destried part of the house, which had the slate roof tiles changed by clay ones, among other
adaptations.
During the 80’s, several stores and small trades occupied Morada dos Baís, which
suffered with the occupants disregard. The degradation ended only in 1993 when the building went through a restauration and was protected by
organisms of Mato Grosso do Sul’s State Government.
