Campo Grande - Church - São Benedito Church

Campo Grande - São Benedito Church

São Benedito’s Church

It was constructed by a former slave called Eva Maria de Jesus, or Aunt Eva, as she was known. Says the story that she had a wound, considered without cure at that time. She then made a promisse to São Benedito, which consisted in the cure of her wound in exchange of a church to be built in the name of the saint.

As devotion and a way of gratitude, she raised the walls of the church with the help of donations. In 1905, she left her homeland with her two daughters to start the construction of the church in Campo Grande, work that would last years and concluded only with the help of the population.

The church was inaugurated at 1919 May 13th and coincided with the anniversary of the slavery abolition. With a great party, the community, as responsible for the work as Eva, celebrated next to São Benedito’s image brought by Aunt Eva from Goiás State. In 1926, aunt Eva passed away and her body was buried in front of the church’s altar.

Nowadays, during May, the local community organizes parties in the name of the saint and the former slave, who became a symbol of perseverance, faith and devotion.
