Those who travel to Pantanal MUST save at least a couple of days to better know
the capital of Mato Grosso do Sul State, Campo Grande. The city, which is one of the entrance doors to Pantanal, mixes the excitement of
urban attractions with the calmness of a city that grew up a lot, but in an ordinate way.
Campo Grande is a recent city, around 130 years old. Despite being “young”, it
had a quick economical development, motivated especially by the arrival of emmigrants during the first decades of the 20th century,
provenient mainly from the country side of Minas Gerais and Rio Grande do Sul States, and immigrants from other countries like Lebanon,
Armenia and Japan.
The mix of foreign people with the natives, the terena and bororo indians, made
Campo Grande famous for the ethnic mix. It’s not called "Cidade Morena" or "Cidade Cor de Mel" out of any reason, since
most of its inhabitants has a characteristic brunet skin color. Also for being next to a Cerrado region, Campo Grande has a hot and dry
climate and, during the dry season, the wind makes the dust arise and paint the city and the people with a red tone.
The most impressive in Campo Grande maybe is the contrast of the sky, almost
always blue, with the color of the land, the trees and the historic buildings from downtown. Campo Grande is located on a plainfield region,
where it’s possible to see the limits of the horizon at the background of any landscape. Clean, with trees everywhere and several gardens
between broad streets, Campo Grande keeps growing in harmony with nature, indian culture and historic roots.
The capital of Mato Grosso do Sul State has a good tourism infrastructure, with
hotels and restaurants of international quality. To buy souvenirs, the most recommended is to visit the “Casa do Artesão”, where it’s
possible to find typical craftsmanship. At the indian fair, in the Municipal Market, tourists find the main products of the region, including
the kit to make Tereré, a typical beverage of Mato Grosso do Sul State, which tastes like Chimarrão - but cold.
