Parque Nacional de Monte Pascoal
The first piece of land sighted by the Portuguese after months in open sea, the
Monte Pascoal named by Pedro Alvarez Cabral, was transformed into an area of permanent protection in 1961. Today its 14.480 hectares are one of
the last great areas of preserved Atlantic Forest, giving shelter to species of the fauna threaten by extinction like the collared sloth, the
black hedgehog, jaguar, sussuarana, plumed falcon, the deer and the armadillo, and in the flora like the brazil wood, the sassafras cinnamon and
the black jacaranda. In its echo system you can find swampy areas, marches and thickets. In the park visits to the Pataxó Indian Village are
permitted. In spite of the changes in their culture, their handicraft is very beautiful. The village is located on the cost near the town of
Caraíva and it reached by the beaches, usually they are hospitable and attentive specially the children.
For those who prefer the ecology trail or want to reach the peak of mountain, 536
m high, you should go to the visitors center. There you will find trained guides that will lead you. The official entrance of the park is on the
BR-101, at km 796 and the center is open daily from 8am to 4pm. |
