Today its 14.480 hectares are one of the last great areas of preserved Atlantic Forest, giving shelter to species of the fauna threaten by extinction like the collared sloth, the black hedgehog, jaguar, sussuarana, plumed falcon, the deer and the armadillo, and in the flora like the brazil wood, the sassafras cinnamon and the black jacaranda. In its echo system you can find swampy areas, marches and thickets. In the park visits to the Pataxó Indian Village are permitted. In spite of the changes in their culture, their handicraft is very beautiful. The village is located on the cost near the town of Caraíva and it reached by the beaches, usually they are hospitable and attentive specially the children.

For those who prefer the ecology trail or want to reach the peak of mountain, 536 m high, you should go to the visitors center. There you will find trained guides that will lead you. The official entrance of the park is on the BR-101, at km 796 and the center is open daily from 8am to 4pm.
