Congonhas |
Congonhas is an essentially cultural destination, indicated for those who enjoy
history and, especially, art. It can’t be denied that “Santuário do Bom Jesus de Matosinhos” is the main tour spot of the small city. By the way,
it’s an indispensable attraction, since it’s the temple that is considered as one of the most important works of the baroque period.
“Santuário do Bom Jesus de Matosinho” is registered as Mankind Cultural Heritage
by UNESCO. It’s where the prime work of the biggest brazilian artist of the baroque period, Antonio Francisco Lisboa, also known as Aleijadinho,
is located. In the stairway that leads to the church there are the 12 prophets sculpted by Aleijadinho in soap stone, besides other 66
sculptures that pictures “Via Sacra de Jesus Cristo”, in the chapel set known as "Passos da Paixão".
The religion is a permanent characteristic of those who live in Congonhas and can
be felt even by tourists. The city also became famous during the 60’s due to the cures realized by medium Zé Arigó, who incorporated the spirit
of Dr. Fritz, what attracted thousands of people who couldn’t get better with the treatments of the traditional medicine.
Congonhas dispute the attention of tourists with other neighbor localities, which
also had their formation coupled to the tireless search for gold. Among all of them, Congonhas is, maybe, the most peaceful city of them, where
one day is more than enough to know and appreciate magnificent artworks. It’s located in the countryside of Minas Gerais, 50km away from Ouro
Preto and 82km away from Belo Horizonte.
