Corumbá - Historical Building - Fortress Coimbra

Fortress Coimbra

Fortress Coimbra

Fortress Coimbra was built in 1775 to protect the portuguese territory from the spanish invasion, who dominated the Spanish America. It was used also in the defense of Brazil during Paraguay’s War, in the end of the 19th century. It has difficult access, being possible to arrive only by boat or plane.

Historically, it was a very important place. Protected since 1978 by Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional, Forte Coimbra also hosted a prison. Today, it belongs to Brigada de Infantaria de Fronteira.

Forte Coimbra is located on the right side of Paraguai River, 16km away from the city of Murtinho and can be visited only with army’s authorization.
