Corumbá - Historical Building - Fortress Junqueira

Fortress Junqueira

Fortress Junqueira Portal

It earned this name in honor of War Ministry José Oliveira Junqueira, deceased in 1887. It was built soon after the end of Paraguay’s War. It has calcareous walls 50cm thick and 12 english cannons, which have never been used.

Fortress Junqueira Works today as a memorial inside the HQ of the Batalhão de Caçadores, installed over a hill, what makes possible a nice view of Pantanal. To visit the fortress, it is necessary to get the army’s authorization, obtained at Semactur.
