Corumbá - Churches - Nossa Senhora da Candelária Church

Nossa Senhora da Candelária Church

Nossa Senhora da Candelária Church

Built in 1885, the history of this church is kind of polemic. Founded as Frei Mariano da Bagnaia Church, in 1887, it changed its name due to the expelling of the father by the bishops. Then, it began to be called Nossa Senhora da Candelária.

The legend says that Father Mariano, after being tortured and persecuted during Paraguay’s War, raised a church on his own honor. His superiors didn’t like the idea and took the church from him. Annoyed, Father Mariano spelled a curse on the city, saying that Corumbá’s development would remain stopped until they find a pair of sandals of Father Mariano, buried in an unknown place. Those sandals are still missing.
