The construction of the original Metropolitan Cathedral is dated from 1973. But it
was demolished and rebuilt just before. This incident causes polemic up to nowadays among the city’s residents. The church’s main relic is the
figure of Senhor Bom Jesus do Bonfim.
Says the legend that the figure, carved in wood, was made in Sorocaba, São Paulo’s
countryside, and abandoned in Mato Grosso. Some time later, it was found by a traveler that, realizing that he couldn’t take the figure back to
São Paulo due to its weight, he left the statue in Cuiabá. The legend says that the statue became light right after the arrival at the
church.
The building is the seat of Senhor Divino’s Party, which occurs from May to
June.
