| Cuiabá - Church - São Gonçalo Church |
São Gonçalo’s Church began to be built in 1782 and was finished only in 1916. Due
to the delay in the construction, caused by several reasons, it has an eccletic style. However, it was recently reformed in the neoclassical
style. It has a 3,4 meters high statue of Jesus Christ and paintings of Coimbra e Corumbá’s Fortress, saved from destruction during Paraguay’s
War.
Historians say that the church was the precursor in inserting music and dance on
the masses, a common thing nowadays. During the party in the honor of the saint, the devotees dance and sing on a circle, while a woman
equilibrates the saint’s image on her head. The celebration has plenty of food and beverages. The party is known exactly because of these happy
manifestations in the name of São Gonçalo, represented by a guitar player.
