Casa Cuiabana

Casa Cuiabana

Casa Cuiabana is a reference of the 17th century´s architecture found in Cuiabá and shows a style used very much by the residents. It was constructed in 1816, with mud walls and adobe – a kind of brick dried under sunlight - above foundations made of pedra canga. It served as a house for very traditional families of the city and is placed on a corner. The main facade has five Windows and a singe door, besides other five Windows over the lateral.

Actually it works as a cultural center, but preserves the original characteristics, typical of a Cuiabá’s residence. The intention is to show the routine of the residents during the city’s primordial epoch. At Casa Cuiabana it’s also promoted activities like the divulging of the local traditions, through the realization of parties and dance and cooking workshops.

There’s a permanent exhibit with objects and furniture that displays the history and the economical development of the region. Casa Cuiabana also has a chapel and a private room for merchandise commerce of small utensils, besides serving as a meeting point. At the basement were kept the slaves to be punished.

Extremelly well preserved, the building went through a restoration in 2003. Casa Cuiabana is protected since 1983 by Mato Grosso State Government.
