Geodesic
Center |
Cuiabá is the geodesic center of South America. Besides the strange name, the title
only means that the city is located right in the center of the continent. A obelisk raised at Praça Moreira Cabral indicates the point where the
distance between Atlantic and Pacific Ocean is exact the same: 2000 km.
The place where the mark was built was called “Campo Dourique” during the
19th century and worked as a hanging square and bullfight field. Now, there’s the Mato Grosso Legislative Assembly.
The definition of Cuiabá as the center of the continent was determined in 1909 by
the Rondon Comission, headed by Marshal Rondon himself, in one of his scientific expeditions. However, a city 60 km away from Cuiabá contends
with the capital the title of “Center of South America”.
The small city of Chapada dos Guimarães says that, according to calculations made
with satellite images, the middle of the continent is the encounter of Chapada dos Guimarães with Pantaneira Plains. So, Chapada dos Guimarães
built another mark, 8 km away from the city.
