Diamantina |
Far away from the cities that integrate the gold circuit, Diamantina is located in
the North of Minas Gerais. In opposition to other historic locations of Minas Gerais country side, which reach their economic development apogee
in the gold extraction era, Diamantina became famous for other reason.
Instead of gold, diamonds sponsored the construction of so many buildings, among
small palaces and churches, nowadays meticulously preserved, considered relics of the colonial era. Diamantina deserves the title of Mankind
Cultural Heritage, granted by Unesco in 1999. The architectonical sand urban set is well preserved, making possible to recognize the city’s
sketch on a blueprint made in the 18th century. Contemporaneous works, made in the 20th century, authorship of Oscar Niemeyer,
enriched the set more and more.
Homeland of Chica da Silva, slave who made use of the power for being lover of a
rich portuguese, and of former president Juscelino Kubitschek, Diamantina knew how to preserve its own history. In the houses that were used by
illustrious personalities, today host memorials. Museu do Diamante and Church Nossa Senhora do Carmo complete the attractions list, both of them
located in the historical center. The best way to know the place is to walk on its sinuous and steep streets and walkways adorned with stones
taken from Serra dos Cristais.
Besides the historical buildings, Diamantina has natural attractions, especially
waterfalls and caves. If there’s some time left, it is worth to know Biribi and Curralinho, two villages in the city surroundings. Those who
don’t like crowded places should avoid the visit in traditional holidays, like Semana Santa, Festa do Divino and Nossa Senhora do
Rosário.
