Santo Antonio Cathedral is a recent construction, from the 30’s. History tells that
the first explorers who lived in the city built the chapel in devotion to Santo Antônio. Some time later, the building was demolished.
Only in the beginning of the 20th century a new chapel was constructed,
taking proportions and title of cathedral. The first stone of the construction was sanctified in a solemn ceremony by Dom Joaquim Silvério de
Souza, archbishop of Diamantina.
