Nossa Senhora do Carmo Church |
The construction in baroque style, dated from 1765, was sponsored by João Fernandes
de Oliveira, diamond buyer. Inside the church, portuguese paintings of guard José Soares de Araújo can be found. Nossa Senhora do Carmo Church
is considered one of the richest catholic temples of the region, with an organ foiled with gold on its patrimony, which was played by José
Américo Lobo de Mesquita, the greatest sacred musician of Latin America in the 18th century.
Other Works can be appreciated, like the image of Christ’s disciples, painted in
glass on the sacristy, and images of Santa Tereza, Santo Elias and Nossa Senhora das Dores. There’s a legend which tells that the construction’s
tower would have been built in the back of the building, so the noise of the bells wouldn’t bother Chica da Silva, famous slave who became an
important person in the city by becoming the lover of a rich portuguese.
