Nossa Senhora das Mercês Church |
Nossa Senhora das Mercês Church was built by slaves who were not accepted by
brotherhood of Rosário. At that time, blacks and women were not allowed to attend at the masses, so they built their own specific chapels.
By the construction details, it’s possible to affirm that the temple was carefully
decorated, with the golden altar, carved in 1772, as its prominence. The construction also has ceiling decoration, made by artist Esperidião
Roiz da Cunha and painted and carved by Manuel Alves Passos.
The building houses several sacred pieces of big historic value, like silverware,
lamps and old images.
