Mercado Municipal of Diamantina is, since its construction epoch, an important
meeting point of the city. It’s located at the old Largo da Cavalhada, actual Praça Barão de Guaicuí. After the inauguration in 1835, it
acquired a special meaning for the city residents, since it represented the most important communitarian and commerce space.
In the beginning, the building was erected to serve as residence to the family of
Lieutenant Joaquim Casimiro Lages, but soon became a ranch for cattle dealers. Actually, Mercado Municipal is a great cultural reference for
those who visit Diamantina, since it houses Centro Cultural David Ribeiro de Alcântara.
At Saturdays, the traditional fair of rural producers and craftsmanship
happens.
