Florianópolis |
Until the colonization of Brazil, the coast side of Santa Catarina was inhabited
by tupis-guaranis indians. The first portugueses arrived to the place where Florianópolis is placed today, still during the beginning of the
16th century, but they used “Ilha de Santa Catarina” just as a point for water supply and food provisioning.
Only in 1675 the settlement of “Nossa Senhora do Desterro”, actual Florianópolis,
is founded, starting to attract migrants from several points of Brazil, besides European foreigners. During the 18th century, the
fortress necessary to the defense of the territory were built, since it was a region highly aimed by invaders for being on a strategic position.
It’s from that moment that agriculture becomes important and, in some beaches of the island, whale hunting for the extraction of oil and meat
gains strength.
In 1923, the village is elevated to the category of city and receives the name of
“Capital da Província de Santa Catarina”. The name “Florianópolis” was adopted in 1894, in homage to Marshal Floriano Peixoto. During the
20th century, the city passed for innumerous changes with the implantation of electric power and water and sewer systems.
Actually, the capital of the State of Santa Catarina attracts tourists from several
parts of the world, interested on the natural beauties and in the historic patrimony of the place. It’s one of the cities with the best life
quality of Brazil and reference when the topic is nature’s preservation, since 40% of the island territory remains covered by “Mata Atlântica”. |
