Hercílio Luz Bridge |
“Hercílio Luz” is considered one of the biggest suspension bridges of the world
and was constructed in 1922, November. It’s approximately 820 meters long and weights 5 thousand tons. All the material used in the construction
was brought from USA and assembled by American and brazilian technicians.
With the bridge construction, Florianópolis stopped being an isolated village.
Until the construction, in 1926, every access to the island was made by boats. In the time the bridge was built, it was extremely innovative in
the engineering field for being a suspension bridge, in other words, a bridge suspended by a structure of steel cables. The original flooring
was made of wood and was changed by asphalt in 1969. However, nowadays the structure is damaged and the bridge is interdicted since 1991.
Created by Governor Hercílo Luz, he didn’t see the bridge finished, because he
died 12 days after the symbolic inauguration act of a wooden replica of the bridge at Praça XV.
