Santa Cruz do Anhatomirim Fortress is located at the island with the same name and
was constructed between 1737 and 1744. It had the purpose of defend the entrance of the north shore of the island and had about 57 cannons. One
of the local curiosities is “árvore dos enforcados” (“tree of the hanged”), still preserved to picture the history of hangings and shootings
occurred during “Revolução Federalista” in 1894. It was used by militaries until the beginning of the 20th century.
Actually, Santa Cruz do Anhatomirim Fortress is kept as a kind of memorial that
keeps alive a history of Florianópolis. Registered as Historic Patrimony, it has a photo collection and an aquarium with sea fishes found in
Santa Catarina’s shore. There’s snack bar and restaurant at the local.
To arrive there it’s necessary to use schooners that do sea tours in the region
and leave from several points of Florianópolis, among them “Trapiche da Beira Mar Norte”, “Praia de Canasvieiras”, “Praia do Antenor” and
surroundings of Hercílio Luz Bridge.
