São José da Ponta Grossa Fortress |
Formed by three areas connected by ramps, São José da Ponta Grossa Fortress was
constructed in 1740 to shelter military forces. During the 18th century it had three cannon batteries, which had more than 30
artillery pieces each.
Today, there are only eight of the original cannons. Made of blended iron, the
manufacture is anterior to the 18th century. Registered as National Historic and Artistic Patrimony, the monument was reformed during
the decade of 1990 and became a tour spot much visited in Santa Catarina. There’s also souvenir stores and exhibition of photo panels and old
objects.
Located at “Praia do Forte”, it’s 25km away from Florianópolis’ downtown. The
access can be done by boats, through “Praia de Jurerê”, or by car, through SC- 401 Highway.
