| Florianópolis - Church - Metropolitan Cathedral |
Metropolitan Cathedral |
Registered as Historic Patrimony by the State and the City, Metropolitan Cathedral
was inaugurated in 1773. It was constructed in substitution to a small chapel that existed in the place. Due to constant reforms, only few were
left of the original architectonical set.
One of the main prominences of Florianópolis’ cathedral is the collection of sacred
art, which gathers, among other works, the sculpture "Fuga Para o Egito", from artist Demetz, which displays in two cedar blocks the
escape of the Holy Family in natural size. It also has a german pipe organ, from 1924, a main carillon with five bells, from 1922, and stained
glasses, made in São Paulo, from 1949.
By Fridays, from 8AM to 6PM, at “Largo da Catedral”, there’s a craftsmanship and
home culinary fair. In front of the cathedral there’s a tour information stall.
