Florianópolis - Church - São Francisco da Ordem Terceira Church

São Francisco da Ordem Terceira Church

São Francisco da Ordem Terceira Church

São Francisco da Ordem Terceira Church started to be planned in 1754, but it was inaugurated only in 1815. The church portals dates from 1804 and the bells are from 1819, being installed after the conclusion of the works. However, there are reports that the lateral doors that gave access to these bells had to be closed in 1851, due to rumors that the towers were crumbling down.

Nowadays, the church keeps most of its original characteristics, having as its main mark traces of the baroque and neoclassical styles. The building is registered as City and State Historic Patrimony, and is one of the prominences of “Centro Histórico de Florianópolis”. In the temple interior, there are several art works from the 18th century, among saint images and panels.

“Ordem Terceira de São Francisco da Penitência” is one of the oldest religious communities of the city, created in 1745. Despite it was one of the most expressive orders, it had to spend at least 70 years installed at Matrix Church until earning its own HQ, in the beginning of the 19th century.
