Menino Deus Chapel |
Menino Deus Chapel is one of the great architectonical references of Florianópolis’
downtown, besides sheltering a great number of old sacred pieces of Portuguese origin dated from the 18th century, only behind
Metropolitan Cathedral. From the place it’s possible to appreciate the panoramic view of the city, explored by painters and photographers of the
19th century.
The building was constructed to shelter the image of “Senhor Jesus dos Passos”.
Sculpted at Bahia, the statue was being taken to the State of Rio Grande do Sul. But it was left in Florianópolis and, since then, “Jesus dos
Passos” started to be worshiped by the people of Santa Catarina.
In natural size, with glass eyes, real clothes and natural hair, the statue
represents a man with a suffering expression. The cult to “Nosso Senhor Jesus dos Passos” is already more than 200 years old. It’s the main
religious celebration of Florianópolis and occurs yearly during the Easter Sundays.
