Victor Meirelles Museum |
Built in an architectonical style typical of portuguese works from the end of the
18th century, the house that serves as seat for Victor Meirelles Museum has two floors and was the residence of the portuguese painter
Victor Meirelles. In the ground floor there was the depot of the father of the artist, since it was a common habit at that time to unite residence
and commerce in the same construction.
The house is one of the few that remained from the 18th century capable
of showing in a real way the kind of construction of that time. It was registered as National Historic and Artistic Patrimony in 1950. Just in
1952 the museum moved in, as a way to keep alive the memory of the artist and his works.
The collection counts with oil paintings and watercolor paintings, besides some
sketches, from along his entire life. In the museum there’s available space for temporary exhibitions, which count with works of national and
international artists, known or not, aiming the popularization of art.
