Campeche Beach |
Campeche Beach is 3km long and is situated between Joaquina and Morro das Pedras,
without any division of geographic marks. The water, which has high-grade of saltiness, presents strong waves and is very sought by surfers. The
sands are thin and white. There are dunes used by young people for the practice of sand board.
Campeche earned this name only in 1860, when it stopped being called of Mandu Beach
and was renamed with the same name of the island situated in front of it. The versions told the most in Florianópolis about the origin of the
name tells that Campeche is the adaptation of a French nickname that an aviator would had given to the place: “Champ et Pêche” (field of fishing).
There’s another version that says that, probably, the actual name of the beach and the island would be the same of a vegetal used to color
clothes, like Pau-Brasil, during Brazil’s colonization time. |
